Day #1

Breakfast -- 1 c. pureed pear (with oatmeal). Puree the pear and add a packet of instant oatmeal (plain, apple, vanilla, etc.) Nuke until warm. You don't even need to add water.

Question -- 1 pear is 1 fruit. 1/2 c. pureed fruit is 1 fruit. 1 pear = 1 c. puree = 1 or 2 fruits? I took 2.

Snack - Carrots 1 c.

Snack -- dried figs (man these are good!)

Lunch -- 1/2 c. spinach salad

After-dinner snack -- apple

For the record: 4 fruits; 2.5 veggies -- Today's score: 6.5

What is the point?

So, why am I here, you ask? I've been toying with the idea of taking the 5 a day challenge to another level. Kind of like locavore-for-a-year meets Julie and Julia meets the food pyramid. I am aware that apparently the 5 a day campaign was killed in favor of Fruits & Veggies More Matters, but frankly, that calculator to figure how much produce you need to eat is confusing. So, I present to you.......


The Dirt Diet Challenge. One Year, One Woman, 1,825 servings of produce.

The rules? From 11/7/07 until 11/6/08, I will eat a minimum of 5 servings of fruits & veggies per day. No matter what. The blog will be to chronicle how much and what I have each day, and interesting recipes, food ideas, and other veggie info.

So here we go! Bring on the produce!
